The Commonwealth Department of Health has provided AMHF with funding for three years to achieve the following outcomes:
The Department has also funded Andrology Australia and the Men’s Health Information and Resource Centre at the Western Sydney University, the longitudinal study of Men’s Health (Ten to Men) and the Australian Men’s Shed Association. Links with these organisations will be established and form an important platform for male health improvement into the future.
The Department also intends to review and update the National Male Health Policy, and hopefully create an implementation plan.
The AMHF has appointed Glen Poole as the full-time Development Officer. Glen is an experienced men’s health practitioner, consultant and advocate who has been working to improve the lives of men and boys in both a voluntary and professional capacity for nearly 20 years. He has a wealth of overseas knowledge and experience.
He took International Men’s Day from being an unknown entity in the UK, to being a mainstream event that sees MPs debating men’s issues in parliament and attracts support from high profile brands such as Lynx (male grooming), Top Man (men’s fashion) and Ladbrokes (bookmakers).
Glen was a speaker at the 2013 National Men’s Health Gathering in Brisbane. Since settling in Australia, Glen has established the Stop Male Suicide Prevention project that has involved conducting workshops throughout Australia and will hold a conference on 9 &10 November 2017 in Sydney.
In the past eighteen months AMHF has produced two position papers on “Men’s Health in Australia: a call for action” written by Associate Professor Gary Misan and “The need for Male-Friendly Approaches to Suicide Prevention in Australia” written by Glen Poole. Both are available on the AMHF website at http://www.amhf.org.au/
AMHF plans to produce a number of position papers on various issues that impact on men and boys. We are seeking your input as to the topics that should be addressed and the priority for tackling them. Could you please complete the survey at https://kwiksurveys.com/s/VdZIz8fX#/0
If you want any further information on what AMHF is planning please contact Gary Bryant, Executive Officer at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 0414 950 902.
This is a great step forward for AMHF and male wellbeing in Australia.
