Why MR Tasmania?

Men account for 49% of our population, but there are very few organisations that are focused on providing information, support and services specifically for men and boys.  While men and boys do well across many indicators and aspects of life, it's not always easy, and many men do face specific challenges.  Here's some of the data that demonstrate the need for male oriented services and action:

  • 3 out of 4 suicides in Tasmania are by men
  • The life expectancy of homeless men is about 49
  • About 50% of men over 18 have experienced violence in their lifetime
  • there is a crisis in young men's mental health.  It costs the country over $3 billion each year

There is a lot more to male health of course, and a few more stats and facts can be found here at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare webpage on male health here.

MR Tasmania aims to provide a point of connection to other services and resources for men and boys, and to be a voice for men and boys in the development of policy, and strategy by government and the community in Tasmania
