Research - Tas male victim/survivors of family violence

We’ve received a request to share information about some research being conducted by Paul Campbell, a Tasmanian Psychologist. Here’s his request.

My name is Paul Campbell, I am a Tasmanian Psychologist and PhD candidate with the School of Health Sciences at Western Sydney University. I am currently conducting research in a Tasmania wide project looking at the experiences of Tasmanian Men who report to being victims of Domestic Violence perpetrated by their female partner or ex-partner. I am also looking for Tasmanian service providers who report to supporting men who report they were victims of domestic violence in a heterosexual relationship. The research focuses on experiences and looks at themes rather than case studies. The main reason for this approach is to ensure participant anonymity in such a small state where ethics approval has been given for general consent so that data cannot be accessed by others in the research pool.

The vast majority of my work in domestic violence over the last 20 years has been assisting women and children who are victims of DV. However, there have been a few men present to my consulting rooms and I was interested in looking at their experience of DV especially those who have children. I was also interested in the experiences of service providers helping these men.

I have recently been given ethics clearance to start the research and as such I was hoping that your group could share the research with men who may call looking to talk or request assistance. I have attached a poster and pamphlets for men and service providers with the research contact details. Please feel free to share the email and poster with any other services you feel may be able to assist. If there is anyone at your organisation who would like to share their experience working with this group of men, my contact details are listed.

Please do not hesitate to contact Paul Campbell at the contact details on the poster directly if you require any further information.
